Our criteria for a cheap toilet is one that costs between US$150 and $250. You can find cheaper toilets but you run the risk of sacrificing performance and reliability. It’s also important to ensure the toilet conserves water as that will keep your water bills under control. Of course flushing performance is also key as you could easily spend what you have saved by buying a $90 toilet in plumbing call-out fees to deal with a stubborn toilet clog and other problems.
Factors to consider when researching cheap toilets for sale:
- Stick to white. Colored toilets are generally more expensive.
- Choose standard dimensions. Specifically restrict your research to toilets that are of standard height (around 14-15 inches) with a 12 inch rough-in distance. This measures the space between the bathroom wall and the center of the toilet drain.
- Consider two piece models instead of integrated one piece units where the tank and bowl are seamlessly integrated.
- When purchasing a corner toilet, buy a standard toilet bowl and a corner toilet tank separately. You’ll find it cheaper that way.
- You’ll find cheap toilets available with both elongated and round toiled bowl shapes. The former is generally more comfortable but takes up more space.
- As you run the numbers, bear in mind that most two-piece toilets are sold without a toilet seat. So budget an extra $30-70 for this, unless your old toilet seat is compatible.
- The vast majority of cheaper toilets for sale have a conventional gravity flush mechanism. Gravity toilets will work well even in low water pressure environments and use tried-and-tested technology. Peek inside the toilet tank and you won’t see any complicated toilet parts. That’s good news when it comes to repairs.
- Most modern toilets these days operate using a 1.6 gallon flush. That’s less than half the flush volume used in traditional toilet designs. So if you are replacing an older toilet, you should see some savings in your water bills.
- If you really want to do your bit for the environment then consider a dual flush toilet where you can choose a smaller volume of water for liquid wastes. But this will bring the price up a little.
- If given the choice between a toilet with a smaller diameter trapway and a larger one, choose the larger. A larger water spot (the surface area of water that remains in the bowl between flushes) is also better as you’ll have a cleaner toilet bowl.
We’ve taken the above criteria and selected three toilet models that offer a very high flush performance, but without the expensive price tag. All three are manufactured by well-known plumbing brands.
