How to unclog a toilet will depend on how badly it is stopped up. For minor problems, you may be able to simply use a plunger. It is important that you have a solid seal in order to create the necessary suction to dislodge the clog from your pipes. You do want to be careful not to plunge too hard as you may damage a pipe.
If the plunger does not work, you may want to try another method. Again depending on what is causing the clog you may be able to pour some dish soap into the bowl of your toilet. If you let this sit for several hours and flash with some hot water, it may dislodge and unclog your toilet. The properties of the dish soap act as a lubricant to enable the material to become unstuck from the sides of pipes.
You can also use a wire coat hanger to try to get what it is stuck. You just need to take apart so that you can use one end to put into the toilet. This will work well with items that are easily gotten to, as the hanger will not be able to bend in the direction of the pipes.
At this point, if the wire hanger does not work, you may need to use a snake. A snake is very easy to use and you just simply put the tip into the toilet bowl and begin unwinding. The snake is able to go around the different brands of your pipes and help to dislodge materials. If you come to the point where you feel some resistance, then you will need to rewind it, remove anything that comes up with it and do it again. You will want to repeat this process until your drain runs clear.
In the worse case scenario, you can use train cleaners, although it is not necessarily recommended. They can be very harsh on the pipes and are not very good for the environment. There are enzymes that you can purchase that will literally eat the materials that are stuck in your pipes. This is not necessarily the fastest method, but it does work very well for clogs. It is also a wonderful preventative measure.
If you are not 100% sure what is exactly stuck in your toilet, such as a foreign object, you may need to hire a plumber. This may be your last resort, especially if you are not comfortable dealing with shutting off water and taking apart plumbing pipes.
